AmaZulu FC begin new season with hard-fought victory over Stellenbosch FC
AmaZulu FC opened their 2026-27 Betway Premiership campaign with a 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday. Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya's second-half penalty proved the difference as Usuthu secured their first three points of the season. The win moves AmaZulu to 4th place in the Premier Soccer League standings with 3 points from 1 game played, having scored 1 goal and conceded none for a +1 goal difference.
How did the match unfold?
AmaZulu started brightly with Athini Maqokolo causing problems for the Stellies defence. The 2025-26 AmaZulu Player of the Season forced goalkeeper Sage Stephens into two fine saves in the first half. Stellies had their moments too, with 19-year-old debutant Avuzwa Mbembe testing Olwethu Mzimela before halftime.
The deadlock was broken in the 59th minute when Maqokolo was fouled in the box. Ngwenya stepped up and coolly converted the penalty to give AmaZulu the lead. Despite several changes from Gavin Hunt, Stellies couldn't find an equalizer as AmaZulu held firm at the back.
What does this mean for AmaZulu FC?
The victory provides a perfect start to Arthur Zwane's tenure as AmaZulu coach. It also gives the team momentum heading into their MTN8 quarterfinal against Sekhukhune United next week. With a solid defensive display and clinical finishing, AmaZulu will be looking to build on this performance in their upcoming fixtures.
What's next for both teams?
AmaZulu will now turn their attention to the MTN8 quarterfinal against Sekhukhune United. Stellies, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they travel to face Polokwane City in their next league match on 11 August.
