AmaZulu FC's scouts were unimpressed by Mbekezeli Mbokazi during his three-day trial at the club. Mbokazi, now a household name in South African football, has revealed that he spent time at AmaZulu FC before eventually being taken to Orlando Pirates. The young centre-back, who is just 20 years old, began his first-team career in 2024 and now stars in Major League Soccer for Chicago Fire. Mbokazi and fellow South African Puso Dithejane were recently featured in a short documentary produced by Chicago Fire, in which the former opened up about his journey from Hluhluwe in KwaZulu-Natal to stardom. In the film, Mbokazi revealed that he had a trial at KwaZulu-Natal club AmaZulu, but it soon became apparent that his future did not lie there. He would eventually end up in Pirates' development structures, where he made his debut at just 19 years old. And so, Mbokazi's meteoric rise began, paving the way for a move to the United States. But what led to AmaZulu FC's scouts being unimpressed by the young player? According to Mbokazi, his coach Wanda Mnguni took him for trials at AmaZulu, but told him not to go there anymore, as he was taking him to Pirates. So, Mbokazi's time at AmaZulu FC was short-lived, and he went on to achieve great things with Orlando Pirates. Now, as a star player for Chicago Fire, Mbokazi looks back on his journey with pride. The documentary, which features Mbokazi and Dithejane, provides a unique insight into the lives of two South African footballers who have made it big abroad. As for AmaZulu FC, the club will be wondering what could have been if they had signed Mbokazi. But for now, they will have to be content with watching him shine in Major League Soccer.
