In a rollercoaster match that saw AmaZulu FC fall to Sekhukhune United in the MTN8 quarter-finals, head coach Arthur Zwane was unreservedly critical of his team's defensive performance. The home side began strongly with Thando Ngwenya putting them ahead early on, but the momentum quickly shifted as Babina Noko equalized for Sekhukhune United. Despite the lead change, AmaZulu appeared to lose control in the second half, conceding two quick goals that turned the game around.
‘I’ve never seen such horrible defending from my side,’ Zwane declared after the match. ‘Second half, I’ve never seen such horrible defending.’ The coach expressed frustration with his defenders' inability to contain their opponents, particularly one player who was given too much space and time on the field. 'When we had three other defenders on him, I told them he is left-footed, force him to go to his right, don't allow him to go inside,' Zwane lamented.
Despite the defensive lapses, AmaZulu showed resilience by fighting back to equalize and even threatened a comeback. However, Zwane believes his team should have capitalized on their chances earlier in the second half: 'After equalising, we should have scored two or three goals. Quick goals kill the game,' he stated.
Reflecting on the match, Zwane acknowledged that such defensive frailties would be punished at any level of professional football. He concluded with a message to his team, emphasizing the importance of learning from their mistakes: 'It’s one of those things. You need to learn from these mistakes.'
