Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the signing of Wandile Dube from AmaZulu FC, finalising one of the most significant deals on the final day of the transfer window. The move represents a major step up for the young defender, who leaves an AmaZulu side sitting third in the Premier Soccer League with 16 points from seven games.
Negotiations between the two clubs had reached an advanced stage, with Sundowns moving ahead of rivals Orlando Pirates to secure the player. Dube had not featured for AmaZulu this season despite being fully fit and training with the first team in Durban. The club had previously triggered an extension clause in his contract and prepared a long-term offer in an effort to keep him at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
His former coach, Arthur Zwane, had spoken highly of his potential. "Dube has so much potential," Zwane said. "He is a rare breed and can become a special player, but we obviously need time." Zwane had also cautioned against rushing the defender into action when the team was not performing well.
The transfer sees Dube move to Sundowns' base in Chloorkop, where he will have the opportunity to compete for domestic and continental honours. For AmaZulu, the departure weakens a defensive unit as they prepare for their next league fixture away to Durban City on 16 October.
